Guide to Mori Girl { Forest Girl Style }

Mori kei (meaning forest style) may seem like one of the most simple of Japanese fashions, but there are actually quite a lot of things you need to know about it (not to intimidate you).
These are not "rules" you need to follow, these are just some things I find are very common in the mori girl lifestyle and fashion! This style is inspired by girls you would find wandering in the forest, mostly in daydreams and fairytales.
Let's get started!

❀ L i f e s t y l e

The "perfect" mori girl is one who lives in a precious little cottage or cabin in a beautiful forest, or a small apartment in a rural community. You can find mori girls visiting tea shops, cafes, vintage book and furniture stores, and flower shops when in town. Hobbies of the archetype mori girl would be hiking, gardening, painting, taking pictures, crafting, etc.

Mori girls also love fairytales, from storybooks, daydreaming, and becoming their own fairytale.

Laid-back, soft spoken, and sweet. The simplicity and innocence of these moods simply help remove stress in my opinion. Never change your own personality to fit the stereotype of the mori girl, but I believe these are things us humans should try to take on anyways!
Most mori girls do not mind being alone, mostly because they love being in their own world, and enjoy their own company.

❀ F a s h i o n

The main things that describe the fashion of mori kei, is loose fitted, lacey, and natural toned fabrics.

Fabrics

⚘ natural, earth-toned colours (beige, burgundy, dark green, navy, brown)
warm colours are the best, make the base of your outfit beige or creme coloured
embroidered designs of plants, flowers, forest animals are preferable

Pieces
]
⚘ Lots of dresses and skirts
⚘ Loose fitted, smock like dresses and tops
⚘ Oversized sweaters, cardigans, ponchos, boleros, shawls, etc (to keep yourself warm in cooler seasons)

Shoes

⚘ Brown with a round toe
⚘ Oxfords are my favourite
⚘ Lace ups
⚘ Comfort is priority in the mori girl style!

Accessories

⚘ Gold, vintage looking jewelry! Antique pocket watches and lockets are my personal favourite~
⚘ Large shoulder bags and cross body bags and purses
⚘ Knitted hats, fluffy fur berets and ear muffs for colder seasons!
⚘ Large shawls and scarves
Tights, leggings and slouchy socks are great pieces to add some layers to your outfit

Makeup & Beauty

⚘ Pale skin with rosy cheeks (like you've been playing outside in the cold). Take care of your skin and drink lots of   water for a healthy glow~
⚘ Loose curls or wavy hair! I think a short curly bob with straight bangs, or long wavy hair with   shorter straight bangs are the cutest for mori kei
⚘ I see brown hair on a lot of mori girls, but strawberry blonde, red, and black are also popular
⚘ Mori girl is all about looking natural, so keep the makeup to a minimum! Some brown mascara, BB cream, blush and lipgloss is what I like to wear! Try to embrace your natural beauty~

❀ S h o p s

Through my experience, I have a few favourite stores where I buy all of my mori girl items. But, thrifting is one of the best things to do! Not only does it fit into the mori girl lifestyle, but you can also find amazing vintage clothing items and room decor pieces, for very affordable prices. I also recommend Forever 21, H&M and Aeropostale for stores that you may have access to if you cannot order online.
